Class 15

 Welcome to Class 13

This week we have made new friends with our French visitors. Together we learnt about the artist Hans Holbein; he was the artist who painted the infamous Henry VIII and the portrait known as The Ambassadors. The children worked together to create their own Hans Holbein portraits of themselves in Tudor clothes and surrounded by symbols that have meaning, or are pertinent to them. They were very interesting portraits with a variety of interests.

To finish our topic this term the children learnt about the Spanish Armada. They considered the English and Spanish interpretations at different stages of the event.

We said goodbye to our French friends and our Chinese teachers during assembly on Thursday. Well done to our superstar Chinese dancers whose performance was brilliant. I have tried to post a video to share it with you but haven't given up due to technical problems - sorry!

English-The Dancing Bear, by Michael Morpurgo.

Some children are familiar with this story, if not they have read some of this well-known author's other books. We have been focussing on creating good openers for a short story. The children have written their own openers considering their audience. They have tried to capture the reader by including details about the characters and setting, as well as suspense to draw the reader in. Detail has been written in creative ways, including: metaphors, similes and personification. Following this the children have learned about direct and reported speech and written a newspaper article about when a bear turned up at Brookside School! Writing for this purpose was a little trickier as tenses have to be kept the same.

Maths - Multiplication and division
This week the children have been practising their multiplication. Some have been using the grid method to multiply whole numbers up to 5 digits. Others have been using the long multiplication method, some even moved into multiplying decimals. Silly mistakes were made at times so we have been emphasising the importance of double checking and finding where the error is, then putting it right.
We have been using the two methods of chunking and the bus stop to solve division questions. It is really important that we know both methods even if we prefer to use a particular one, because as our calculations get harder the different methods become suitable for different questions. Lots of the errors we made highlighted issues with our timestables, so practise will help fix these problems.

Don't forget to carry on practising maths skills over the holidays, here are some websites with fun games to play:

Have a super Easter break everyone; please continue reading, spellings and times table practice. Times table grids will be sent home, please ensure they come back to school so that children can be awarded work marks for their efforts during the break.

 Well done

Well done to our gold badge holders for this term. They are Rebecca W, Flynn, Kaya, Millie, Maddie W and Tanisha.

Routines and Reminders

  • Next term outdoor sports (cricket) is on Mondays. Please make sure children have their kits in school, including hair bands and water bottles, and earrings are taken out on these days.
  • Spellings and times tables will be sent home on a Wednesday and will be tested on a Monday. The next homework will be due in at the end of May - a project about St Ives. More details to follow.
  • Your child is now bringing home reading books. They are able to change their books any day, and their reading records will be signed for the week on Fridays. Please remember to send these in to school. Regular reading is an important part of your child's learning.
